New Year’s Day (Yuandan in Chinese), which is on January 1, marks the start of the year in the Gregorian calendar and it is a public holiday in China.
Yuandan appeared in the ancient times and meant “the first day of a year”. The Chinese character “Yuan” means “at the beginning” and “Dan” means “day”. It was the first day of Chinese lunar year, while it was changed into the first day in Gregorian calendar since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949.
New Years Day for the year 2021 is observed on Friday, January 1st. It is a day off for the general population and schools.
