On August 29, Liyang High-Tech District signed an agreement with Jiangnan University to jointly establish the Synthetic Biology Industrial Transformation Center, aimed at driving the growth of the synthetic biology (SynBio) industry.
SynBio is at the forefront of a new wave of industrial innovation. Changzhou, ahead of other regions in Jiangsu province, has introduced its “Ten Policies for Synthetic Biology,” creating a supportive environment with strong backing in policy, market access, and societal support. Liyang has seized this strategic opportunity and emerged as a pioneer in the SynBio field, attracting a variety of key innovation platforms, including the Yangtze River Delta Medical Application Physics Public Technology Platform and the Tianmu Lake Institute for Health Research. Additionally, several leading biopharmaceutical companies have been drawn to the region. To further support this emerging industry, comprehensive policies like the Industry Cluster Development Guidelines and the Tianmu Lake Talent Program have been introduced.
The Synthetic Biology Industrial Transformation Center will be operated through a partnership between Jiangnan University and industry teams, with a dedicated committee of experts from academia and industry guiding its operations. The center will focus on project incubation, public R&D services, advancing scientific research, and validating new technologies. Its development will proceed in two phases: the first focusing on establishing a verification center and maturation base, and the second on creating a transformation platform and a specialized industrial park.
The ultimate goal is to position Liyang as a national leader in SynBio innovation and to build a hub of global significance for this rapidly evolving industry.
