In the first half of this year, Changzhou hosted four marathons that collectively generated over 100 million yuan in direct economic benefits. Accommodation and transportation accounted for more than half of this economic impact.
This year, Changzhou introduced a groundbreaking initiative with the concept of "One District, One Marathon, One Unique Feature," creating distinct marathons across the city. From March to May, over 40,000 runners participated in these events.
Historically, local runners were the primary participants. However, recent years have seen a significant increase in runners from outside the region and abroad. For instance, in the Zhonglou District Half Marathon, 44.17% of participants were from outside Changzhou, while in the Changzhou Economic Development Zone Half Marathon, this figure rose to 69.78%. Participants came from 16 countries and regions, including Ethiopia, Australia, Germany, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Canada, Kenya, the United States, Japan, and New Zealand.
The influence of these marathons extends beyond the races themselves. They have connected various city attractions and consumer venues, integrating marathon-related economic activity into the local market and boosting local businesses.
The coordinated efforts across districts highlighted Changzhou’s culture, history, natural scenery, tourism, and industrial development, making the marathons excellent ambassadors for the city's image.
A notable feature of Changzhou’s citywide marathons is their inclusive approach, blending professional and mass participation events, and promoting both competitive racing and public fitness. The organizers offered exclusive benefits for marathon participants and their families, including free access to public sports venues and discounts on annual fitness passes.
Additionally, the marathons featured live music, traditional culture-themed markets, food festivals, and performances, engaging both local citizens and participants. These events transformed the marathons into festive celebrations for the entire community, beyond just athletic competitions.
